I know it’s hard to think about winter when it’s 85 degrees outside, but it is coming.

With holiday preparations on the horizon, one can easily get caught off guard by a sudden winter storm. Especially if you live somewhere like Oklahoma, where it can be warm and sunny one day and an ice storm the next.

So, before getting too wrapped up in family gatherings and gift giving, it’s a good idea to take time out to complete a few important tasks.

WINTERIZE YOUR VEHICLE
This includes things like getting the oil changed and refill any fluids (wiper, coolant, etc.) that may be low. And check your windshield wiper blades and tires to see if it’s time to have them replaced. Also, you may consider having your battery tested and belts and hoses to ensure they are in optimal shape.

No one wants to find themselves stranded on the side of the road while it’s freezing outside. But, just in case you do, don’t forget to keep the essentials in your car, such as jumper cables, blankets, a flashlight, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks.

WINTERIZE YOUR HOME
While it is a privilege to own a home, the “to do” list never seems to end, especially during the winter months. For starters clear away any debris that may be outside your home and declutter inside the house. When the temperature gets cooler, all types of critters will start seeking shelter and you don’t want to provide them with comfortable living spaces.
Also, to prevent erosion and water damage to your home, have the gutters cleaned and repaired/replaced.
To help keep your home warm, make sure that you have appropriate insulation and caulking. Drafts of cold air coming in and heat escaping through the cracks can cause your energy bill to skyrocket during the winter months. If you plan to use a fireplace, be sure to have your chimney inspected and properly cleaned.

And don’t forget to check/change the batteries in the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, check your flashlight, battery, and candle supplies and restock if needed.

PRACTICE SELF-CARE
Shorter daytime hours and colder weather can have a negative impact on our physical and mental health.

Have you completed your annual wellness exam? If not, now is the perfect time to schedule a visit with your doctor. And if you suffer from seasonal affective disorder during the winter months, be sure to contact your physician to discuss treatment options.

Revive your fitness routine.
Honestly, this is an area in which I struggle with constantly. But I’ve concluded that doing something some of the time, is better than doing nothing, all of the time.

And check your winter gear to see if you need to add items to your wardrobe, purchase another winter coat, or take a trip to the cleaners.

CHECK-IN WITH OTHERS
While you are getting yourself and your house in order, don’t forget to check in with elderly loved ones. Help ensure that they get all of their to do’s done too.

A little preventive maintenance now, can save you a lot of time, energy, and money later.
